Ministry’s New Program Offers Better Incentives to Vehicle Buyers

Ontario’s Ministry of Transportation has changed its incentive program for environmentally friendly vehicles, a move that will definitely see the number of people buying such vehicles increase. The changes have come with updates to the list of vehicles that are eligible for incentives.

March 9, 2018, was the date that the Transportation Ministry in Ontario transformed the EVIP (Electric Vehicle Incentive Program) to become EHVIP (Electric and Hydrogen Vehicle Incentive Program). This move has brought about the following changes:

Eligible Hydrogen Fuel Cell Vehicles ( HFCVs) will have incentives reaching a maximum of $14000.
Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles (PHEVs) and Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) that are eligible will now have incentives determined by each vehicle’s seating capacity and all-electric range.
Buyers of PHEVs and BEVs having Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Prices of $75000 or more will no longer receive incentives from the ministry.
Owners looking to acquire PHEVs and BEVs through leases spanning less than 3 years will not get any incentives.

Furthermore, incentives under the old EVIP program are still available for owners as long as ordering of the vehicles was before March 9, 2018. In addition, these vehicles should be delivered and applications submitted by 7 September 2018 for owners to receive incentives.

Eligible Hydrogen and Electric Vehicles

The following are the conditions for a vehicle to be eligible for an incentive under the new program:

The vehicle must be included on the list of EHVIP Eligible Vehicle and Incentive.
It’s a precondition that the vehicle is new, registered, not previously plated, roadworthy, and insured.
Only demonstrator vehicles used at a dealership for customer test drives are eligible. Moreover, these vehicles should have mileages reading less than 2000 km.
Registered electric vehicle owners who have not received incentives (EVHIP) are also eligible.

Models of vehicles eligible for incentives are Audi, Honda, BMW, Fiat Chrysler, Ford, General Motors, MINI, Mercedes Benz, Kia, Hyundai, Nissan, Mitsubishi, Volkswagen, Smart, Toyota, and Volvo. Although used electrical vehicles don’t have eligibility for incentives, they are eligible to get Green Vehicle License plates.
